The Governing Body

Hello and welcome to the Governors page of the school website. Below we hope to provide you with a comprehensive guide to what the governors do.

A letter from the Chair.......

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Thackley Primary School's new fantastic website; I hope you will agree that this is just one of the wonderful improvements that have been made to the school over the last few years to try and ensure that your child's time here is both enjoyable and productive.

Here at Thackley we have a dedicated team of governors, teachers, staff and parents who strive to provide the best possible learning experience for your children. It is our aim to give each child the highest possible quality of education in a safe, friendly and happy environment in order to ensure that they have reached their full potential mentally, physically and socially.

I am always around at the start and end of each school day collecting my own children and I always value your comments and suggestions, so if you wish to speak to me please feel free!

Regards

Annmarie Malcolm

Q. How does a governing body work?

A. The school governing body:

  • work closely with the headteacher
  • makes decisions collectively as a team.
  • often delegates decision-making to committees or to individuals, for example, to the headteacher; and
  • conducts most of its business through meetings, making use of relevant papers and guidance, and advice from the Headteacher.

Q. What do the governors do?.

A. Parts of a school governing body's responsibilities are to:

  •  promotes high standards of educational attainment;
  • agree the School Improvement Plan
  • set an annual budget detailing planned spending;
  • approve the staffing structure;
  • make sure that the school is balanced and broadly based, in particular that the National Curriculum and Religious Education are taught, and report on pupils' achievement in National Curriculum assessments and examination results.
  • draw up an action plan following an OFSTED (See Office for Standards in Education) report;
  • produce policies on a number of issues including Sex Education, S.E.N;
  • appoint staff, ensuring the implementation of a range of personnel procedures;
  • secure high levels of attendance and good standards of pupil behaviour
  • ensure the health and safety of pupils and staff;
  • develop the strategic plan for the school, acting as a critical friend and ensuring accountability;
  • deal with complaints against the school

Basically, the governors oversee the work of the school and make sure it provides a good quality of education for its pupils.

The governors work in partnership with the Headteacher and staff.
